What is a Horizontal Concealed Fan Coil Unit?

A Horizontal Concealed Fan Coil Unit is a type of air handling device used in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. As the name implies, it is designed to be installed horizontally (typically within a ceiling void or a raised floor plenum) and is fully concealed from view, with only the supply air grille and return air grille visible in the room.

It is a “terminal unit,” meaning it serves a specific zone or room, providing localized climate control. Its operation is based on transferring heat to or from a space using a coil of pipes (the “coil” part) and a fan that circulates room air over that coil (the “fan” part).

Key Components

1. Casing: A galvanized steel or insulated enclosure that houses all components. It is designed to be compact and quiet.

2. Fan (Blower): A small, quiet centrifugal fan that draws air from the room, forces it over the coils, and discharges the conditioned air back into the space.

3. Heat Exchanger Coils:

   • Cooling Coil: A coil connected to a chilled water system from a central chiller.

   • Heating Coil: Can be either a hot water coil (connected to a central boiler) or an electric resistance heater.

4. Drain Pan: This pan is located beneath the cooling coil and collects and drains away condensation (condensate) that forms during cooling operation.

5. Air Filter: A disposable or cleanable filter located at the return air inlet to protect the coil and fan from dust and debris.

6. Air Return Box: optional.

How does a Hydronic Fan Coil Unit work?

1. Air Intake: The fan draws warm room air (return air) from the space through the return air grille.

2. Filtration & Conditioning: This air passes through the filter and is then forced over the coils.

   • In Cooling Mode: Chilled water flows through the coil, absorbing heat from the air. Moisture in the air condenses on the cold coil and drips into the drain pan.

   • In Heating Mode: Hot water or electric elements heat the coil, transferring warmth to the air passing over it.

3. Air Discharge: The now-conditioned (cooled or heated) air is pushed back into the room through the supply air grille and ductwork, mixing with the room air to achieve the desired temperature.

Typical Applications

Horizontal concealed FCUs are ideal for applications where aesthetics and space saving are critical:

• Office Buildings: Especially in ceiling plenums of individual offices or meeting rooms.

• Hotels: The most common application, used in guest room ceiling voids for quiet, individual climate control.

• Apartment Buildings & Condominiums: For per-unit HVAC systems.

• Hospitals: Inpatient rooms and offices.

• Retail Spaces: In back-of-house areas or smaller stores.
